Marriage is a commitment between two individuals. That is an almost universal concept. What that commitment entails however, is varied from culture to culture. In modern day America, marriage is a commitment of loyalty and love. It is an official contract binding two people together providing them with the benefits of matrimony such as hospital visitation rights and tax breaks. The question plaguing America today is whether or not the rights to these benefits and commitments should be extended to people of the same sex. The answer is simply, why not? Legalizing same sex marriage is the right choice for America because it is economically, politically, socially, and ethically the decision that will improve the United States. The average wedding costs around $28,000. There are caterers, musicians, DJs, wedding planners, florists, and a whole list of other roles that need to fulfilled in order for a wedding to run smoothly. This, multiplied by the 570,000 same sex couples in America equals an 11.4 billion windfall for the wedding industry. This would help alleviate the financial burden. "Gary Gates, a demographer at the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law who researches sexual orientation law and public policy, says the state itself would see a "noticeable economic benefit" from legalized same-sex marriage". A lot of this money would be funneled towards the working class of America. These are the people in America who need the money the most. They are the people who have been hit hardest by the recession. Allowing same sex marriages will provide the working class Americans with a source of income and help the economy rebound. Same sex marriage is being accepted and legalized in more and more countries around the world like Germany and Norway. Legalizing same sex marriage would improve the perception of America in the eyes of the international community. America is known by the rest of the world as a place of bigotry and intolerance. Martin Luther King gave his "I Have a Dream" speech one hundred thirty-one years after England emancipated slaves. Since the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans are still underprivileged in regions of the United States. These facts do not help America's reputation. If the United States legalized same sex marriage, it would be a signal to the nations of the world that America is ready to join them in a modern and equal society. This idea of equal society applies not just internationally, but domestically as well. The United States does not legally recognize the rights of gay and lesbian couples. Legalizing same sex marriage would fulfill the guarantees of the U.S. Constitution that all men are created equal and have the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It would give same sex couples the ability to prove their positive effect on society and create a more peaceful and tolerant society. The opponents of same sex marriage have stated that, by allowing same sex couples to join in matrimony, the definition of marriage is weakened and the value of marriage as a whole begins to decay. Denying all people equal rights is bigotry. To imply that two married people in love and living peacefully would have any effect on the marriages of others is illogical. "First of all, I don't think the American public is that indiscriminating. Second of all, there is no logical connection between gay marriage and all of these other things". This is similar to suggesting that heterosexual marriages of different ethnic background living near other heterosexual couples breaks down those nearby marriages. There is no difference between suggesting either of these intolerant trains of thought. There is nothing more to these comments other than prejudice. A happily married same sex couple would not have a negative impact on a neighborhood or society. Same sex partners wouldn't live their lives any differently than heterosexual partners. The creation of new families is only a positive influence on American society. If same sex couples are given the right to marry, they should be able to adopt children together and raise families. Some argue that raising children in a marriage with a mother and mother or father and father breaks down family values. It has also been suggested that raising a child in a same sex marriage makes that child gay. Neither of these arguments is valid. Many gay couples have already adopted and raised children, and these children have turned out as perfectly healthy, normal, heterosexual children. Having children being taken out of foster care and being raised by a pair of loving, supportive parents could never be detrimental for society. The most important part of raising children to become happy and productive members of society is to provide a loving environment where they feel safe. Having two loving parents is more important than the gender of those parents. It is not ethically correct to tell two people who want to spend their lives together that they can't be married. Many people would disagree with this statement. Many people who are against same sex marriage would also source the Bible, which says marriage is between a man and a woman. They argue that gay people cannot be married because God would not allow it. The Bible also says, however, that the sacred union of marriage should not be severed by divorce. Following the same the line of reasoning that same sex marriage should be illegal because it is not religiously correct would also lead one to believe that heterosexual divorce should be illegal. "Jesus himself had nothing to say about homosexuality, but he's very clear on divorce. You can't do it. And what I don't understand is why gay people are the only people in America who have to follow biblical law". To pick and choose which laws of the Bible should be enforced and which shouldn't defeats the purpose of referencing the Holy Book. Unless heterosexuals are willing to give up the right to divorce, same sex marriage should be legal. Furthermore, religion should have no effect upon government affairs. This nation calls for a separation of church and state, and to allow religion to be a deciding factor in a federal law is not only unethical but unconstitutional. Imagine a neighborhood with a park. Children are playing together, laughing and running, and parents are watching with amused expressions playing across their faces. A pair of these parents is a same sex couple. The couple is smiling with the rest of the parents. A little girl runs up to the couple, hugs them both, and begins jabbering away about her day, holding her parents' hands, without thinking that anything is strange or wrong with the scene. This is what legalizing same sex marriage would do. Legalizing same sex marriage would provide a peaceful society. It would boost the economy, improve America's standing in the world, and it is the only choice that is ethical and tolerant.
