Marriage a commitment between two people to love each other for the rest of their lives. This use to be a simple thing until same sex marriage couple wanted to be married like traditional couples. Majority of the population has either chosen to be for, against, or they don't know what there stand point on this issue is. The only physical difference between a same sex marriage and a traditional marriage is that in a same sex marriage it is between two men or women vs. traditional marriage which is between a man and a women. Other than that they are both anatomically the same, they can both get a job, pay taxes, and start families. When they start families the same sex couples obviously cannot pro create together therefore they go adopt, invertor fertilization, or a surrogate mother but, the point here is that even traditional couples have to do these same things when they cannot reproduce. Traditional and same sex marriages go through similar things from divorce, arguments, sickness, money issues, owning a house and etc. These two different types of marriage are similar in majority of the aspects. With all of this, being a college student we are in or about to begin the part of our lives were we start thinking about marriage and family. I believe that they should not be called traditional or same sex marriage they should simply be called marriage because it is the act of committing yourself to another person, it is not the government's life it is yours, and you don't need a father and a mother to have a family. First of there is the reason for being married in which is committing yourself to another person for the rest of your life. You say vow that mean something to your relationship, you say for better or worse, richer or poor, and sickness and in health. You are there for your significant other through thick and thin. In the article What are we fighting for? Wedgewood says "Marriage is a purely legal Institution" and in some aspect she is right but that is not the reason two people get married (1). They get married because that love each other and want to take the next step in their relationship. She also goes on saying that "Marriage is a fusion of law and culture" and that is totally true because you are involving the law to say that your marriage is real and you are involving your culture of what you believe marriage is (Wedgewood 1). All same sex couples want is to be able to legally say they are married and committed to each other and get the rights that any traditional couple is entitled to. Wedgewood fully support this view when she says "They also want to be regarded as married by society" they want it not only for themselves but for society so they can take them seriously and not that it is some kind of joke (1).Same sex couples want to make the same lawful commitment that traditional couples make because they are the same when you think about it. Two people who love each other enough to make a lifelong commitment. Secondly society need to realize that this is our life not the governments. Even if the government is directly involved in marriage because of legal aspects does not mean we let them control who we can or cannot marry. That choice should be left to the couple to decide whether or not they are ready to make that kind of commitment. In the article Marriage just lets our State back in Kerry Howley says "Marriage Revolution" because we are in a battle that determines who says who we can or can't marry (1). She follows this by saying "Marriage... is a three way contract in which the power of on party, the state greatly outweighs that of the other two" with this she is saying that we are letting the state or government have a lot more power in marriage then we as the people who are making the commitment. I think that the only reason the state or government should be involved is to just say that this marriage is legal and nothing beyond that point. We the people are the ones who are making this commitment and we don't need the government to tell us anything but that you are officially married. The government had made its way into marriage and is now telling us we should not let same sex couple marry and that the people should vote on this matter. Who's right is it to tell me or you who you can or cannot get married to. Howley also says "This congress is threatening to write its definition into the constitutions" and that definition is that a marriage is that of a man and a women. In a sense that is sexual discrimination because we should not be force to only marry our opposite gender when we don't feel attracted to them. This is our commitment and not the governments. Thirdly there is the fact that you does not need a mother and father to have a family. There are many single parents out there who take on the challenge and while it may be sad those children don't turn out any different with one less parent. In the article What marriage is for Maggie Gallagher fights for children to have two parents and she says "The marriage idea is that children need a mother and father" and while she has a strong argument she does not realize what same sex marriage couples can do for children. There are thousands of children out there who are put up or adoption and there are not enough traditional couples out there to adopt them because they want their own flesh and blood, while same sex couples cannot procreate they can save the lives of these children with no parents. Wedgewood supports same sex marriage by saying "By sanctioning gay marriage would strengthen the family.... Stable, long term, and lawful unions. Same sex couples can provide just as good or even better of a home then traditional couples. They say that same sex couples cannot pro create so they should not be allowed to be married, but neither can a lot of traditional couples they have to seek out medical help to have a baby sometimes. In a sense both same and traditional couple have issues with pro creating and that makes them more even than ever. The hopes are that the need for children to be adopted will decrease with more same sex couples getting married and starting families. They say that same sex couple are taking away children from traditional couples but it was them who gave those children up for adoption and same sex couples are just trying to create a family. With that same sex couples give an orphan a second chance at the life they were going to have with their biological parents. Same sex couples may not be able to pro create but they can adopt, use a segregate, or if they are lesbians then one of them or both can get inseminated. Majority of couples get married and then want to start families and that is no different in same or traditional couples. They both have troubles starting families and they either can adopt or use other method of having a child. In conclusion same sex couples and traditional couples are not different when it comes to marriage. So let's just call it marriage because that is what it is. I believe this because it is the act of committing yourself to another person, it is not the government's life it is yours, and you don't need a father and a mother to properly raise a child. This issue greatly affect college student because of the point of their life they are in. Student are looking to make a commitment to another person or have already done so. Same sex and traditional couples both want to make a commitment, start a family, and be legally married with the benefits that come along with it. So who are we to judge them because we would not want someone judging us. Marriage is a commitment between two people.
